Precursor to the forthcoming 5th anniversary of the 68 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) at Puthukkudiyirippu, Mullaittivu, a marathon run and a Pirith chanting ceremony got underway on Tuesday (2) and Thursday (4) under the aegis of Major General A Kariyakarawana, General Officer Commanding, 68 Division.

A total of 250 Army personnel, belonging to Brigades, Battalions and Units under the 68 Division took part in the marathon run that started off from Vellamullivaikkal east and ended at the main entrance to the 68 Division Headquarters on Tuesday (2).

The championship in the marathon run was clinched by the troops of the 14 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and the runner-up slot was won by runners of the 16 Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA).

Similarly, a handball tournament, 20-20 Cricket match and selection of the best battalion under the 68 Division were the other events that got underway during the chain of  anniversary events.
As another major event, an all-night Pirith chanting ceremony got underway at the Headquarters on Thursday (4) after members of the Maha Sangha were taken in a colourful procession. Major General Kariyakarawana offered the tray of betel (Deheth Wattiya) to the monks and formally invited them to commence chanting.

The religious ceremony came to an end with the offer of Heel Daana (breakfast) to the monks, the following morning. The occasion saw monks transferring merits to the fallen War Heroes and invoking of blessings on those serving the 68 Division and the Army in general.

Meanwhile, on December 10, a Guard Turnout and a Guard of Honor accorded to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) added colour to the anniversary programmes.
