Continuing their emergency flood relief work in and around Matara, Malimbada and Sultangoda - Warakapitiya road, 61 Infantry Division troops last evening (6) averted a major disaster by placing sandbags along the roadside bank on Sultangoda - Warakapitiya road in order to prevent flood waters damaging other low-line areas in Malimbada.
Meanwhile, troops prevented further split of the Nilwala River bank by placing sandbags along the threatened areas in Atthudawa, Matara as flood water levels were fast increasing by Friday (6) afternoon.
Troops also continued to provide cooked meals to those who have been affected due to floods. Rescue and relief operations are still on.
Major General R.A.J.N Ranasinghe RSP USP ndc, General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division, Colonel K.A.D.N.R Kannangara RSP IG, Commander, 613 Infantry Brigade, Officers and Other Ranks are physically engaged in the humanitarian operations.
Meanwhile, 9 SLSR troops under the 613 Infantry Brigade continuing humanitarian assistance for the 6th day provided transport facilities through boats and military vehicles for those who are trapped in villages due to floods in Matara and Thihagoda Divisional Secretariat area.
9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 3 (Volunteer) Gemunu Watch troops similarly took part in distributing essential items and meals for the affected- community. Likewise, Search and Rescue Operations were also launched facilitating people to save their lives from this disaster.
