As part of the Clean Sri Lanka programme, the government launched a large-scale beach cleaning initiative covering the coastal stretch from Bentota to Goviapana under the theme “Beautiful Island, Smiling People” on 12th January 2025 in Galle, under the patronage of Honorable Mr. Nalin Hewage, the Deputy Minister of Vocational Education and Galle District Member of Parliament.
The programme commenced with a traditional Seth Pirith ritual, followed by speeches from attended distinguished guests. They emphasised the significance and value of the Clean Sri Lanka Campaign in preserving the environment and promoting tourism.
Troops from the 61 Infantry Division actively engaged in cleaning various locations, including Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda, Dewata beach areas, sections of the Colombo-Galle Main Road near the Hikkaduwa tourist hub, the general cemetery areas, and other key tourist destinations.
M.K Bandula Harischandra, Governor of the Southern Province, W.A Dharmasiri, Galle District Secretary, Major General K.T.P De Silva RSP ndu psc, General Officer Commanding of the 61 Infantry Division, Mr. E.N.G Jagath Seram, Deputy Inspector General of Galle District along with other government officials, participated in the event.
