2 (V) Gemunu Watch troops of the 613 Infantry Brigade of the 61 Infantry Division were among the firsts to reach a construction site near Karapitiya Teaching Hospital where three workers had been buried alive due to the sudden fall of an earth mound this afternoon (09 Dec) in Galle.
Troops despite inclement weather conditions, together with rescue teams of the Disaster Management Centre and volunteers in the area did their best to evacuate those victims within the shortest possible time.
However, rescue workers managed to recover the dead body of one victim and two other badly injured workers. Troops immediately rushed all of them to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
The Commanding Officer of the 2 (V) GW under the supervision of the General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division and the 613 Brigade Commander took necessary steps in this connection.
