60 New 'Api Wenuwen Api' Houses in Gampaha Handed Over to War Heroes


Under the tenth phase of the 'Api Wenuwen Api' housing project for War Heroes, the ownership of 60 more houses completed in Gampaha district were given to War Heroes today (15th September) by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The main event was held at C.W.W. Kannangara Central College in Hunumulla, Divulapitiya this morning. Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was present at the occasion.

HE the President ceremonially handed over the keys of the first house at Delwagura in Meerigama to Petty Officer P I L Perera of the Sri Lanka Navy in the presence of the Maha Sangha and distinguished guests.

The Ministry of Defence has launched the ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ housing project with the aim of uplifting the living standard of War Heroes and their families by assisting them to build their own houses. This project is being conducted under the guidance and close supervision of Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Chairperson of the Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa to build 700 new houses island-wide for veteran War Heroes or their families.

Under the tenth phase, 42 Army, 12 Navy and 06 Air Force War Hero families received the keys to their new houses from H E the President. In addition, gift parcels, consists of household accessories, school stationery and bags were also presented to the War Hero families at the occasion.

So far, the project has completed nine phases in Kandy, Kurunegala, Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Badulla, Galle, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kalutara, Kegalle and Polonnaruwa districts.

Sri Lanka Navy had undertaken the task of constructing the houses in the Gampaha district.

As a show of support to this great meritorious act of building houses to the War Heroes, ‘Rakna Araksaka Lanka Limited’, the government-owned premier security firm donated a cheque worth Rs 5 million to the President for the welfare activities of War Heroes. In addition, the children of C.W.W. Kannangara Central College were given with school books and bags during the event. HE the President also declared open a three-storied class room building in the school premises.

Under the ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ project not only the War Heroes but also the whole society in which he lives gets benefited. Basic infrastructure facilities like roads, electricity, telecommunication, water and sanitation are also upgraded in parallel with the house construction. Special attention is given to provide the needs and urgent requirements of the nearby school around the same time.

Western Province Governor Hon. Alavi Moulana, Hon Ministers Basil Rajapaksa, Felix Perera, Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament, Secretary to President Mr. Lalith Weerathunga, Chairperson of Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Vice-President of the MOD Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs Indu Rathnayake, Senior Officials of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Chief of Defence Staff, tri forces commanders, Inspector General of Police, Director General of the Civil Security Department, security forces personnel, members of the Seva Vanitha Units, government officials and a large number of people were present at the occasion.
