59 Division Spearheads Many Humanitarian Projects in Mullaittivu

12 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), 24 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and the 23 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) troops of the 591 and 592 Brigades of the 59 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu in the past few weeks carried out a series of humanitarian and community-oriented projects for the best interest of low-income group families, living in those areas.

The coordination and the initiative taken by the 59 Division after reaching out to philanthropists and donors got a new wash room, built for the rehabilitated ex-combatant, Mr M Kajan who is handicapped with one leg through funds, made available to the Army by one Mr Nadeera Jayasinghe of the South. The wash room built at Wadduwakal by 12 SLLI troops of the 591 Brigade was formally vested in the beneficiary.

Meanwhile, Mr Jagath Sumathipala, Chairman, Sumathi Group of Companies at the request of the Army sponsored the construction of new a house to the deserving family of Mr J Lakshikan Jude in the general area of Silawatta - 88 since the family was living in a tin sheet-thatched house without any security for all of them including children. 24 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops under the 591 Brigade constructed the house for this needy family.

In the meantime, the businessman, Mr Yogarasa at the request of the 592 Brigade sponsored the completion of the partly-built house of Mrs Nandani Mallika living in Putharikuda Grama Seva Division. 23 SLLI troops of the 592 Brigade under took the task and completed the construction of the partly-built house and vested it in the low income group family.

Again, 59 Division troops gifted 8 push bicycles to 8 selected students learning in the Mulliyaveli Vidyananda National School considering their difficulties in reaching the school for studies. Brigadier K.A.W.S Ratnayake, Ms A.A Anusha Nipuni Upendra and Dr Dasanthi Somaratne jointly sponsored the cost of those push bicycles at the request of the Army. They were gifted to those recipients after visiting their houses.

Moreover, 80 set of school accessories, sponsored by donors, Ms Shirani De Silva and Mr Udara Madurapperuma at the request of the 59 Division were distributed among selected students in Nandikadal, Mullaittivu considering their financial constraints.

In another religious gesture, 59 Division troops considering the needs of the monks and the temple facilitated the supply of a stock of drainage spares, LED bulbs and a 1000 lt plastic water storage tank to the free Sambodhi Viharaya at Kokilai following financial assistance, granted by one Mr Gayan Perera at the request of the Army.

All those community projects were spearheaded by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 59 Division, Major General G.D. Sooriyabandara with the support of 591 and 592 Brigade Commanders who immensely contributed to the projects with respective Civil Coordinating Officers and own troops as specified above. The 59 Division, GOC and Brigade Commanders participated in those humanitarian projects with the blessings of Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu.

All those projects were conducted in keeping with health guidelines.
