56th Inter Regiment Athletic Championship Creates New Hopes

The 56th ‘Army Inter Regiment Athletic Championship - 2019’, the inspiring sports event of the year that generated enormous enthusiasm among Army sports lovers drew to a close this evening (28) at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, amid ceremonials.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army at the invitation of the Army Athletic Committee, graced the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest. Major General Mahinda Mudalige, Chairman, Army Athletic Committee and Commander Security Forces –West, welcomed the day’s Chief Guest on his arrival and conducted him to the main dais.

More than 20 Army-produced reputed athletes who have brought Gold, Silver and Bronze medals home, having competed in many international athletic meets abroad were also present to witness this exciting final event, together with many reputed athletes in the country.

Approximately 800 young and experienced Army athletes, representing all 24 Regimental Headquarters of the Army showcased their athletic prowess in this annual event, comprised of track and field events during this 3-day long Athletics Championship that began on Monday (26) at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Sri Lanka Artillery & Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Regiments became core champions.

Army athletes in many international meets, including Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, South Asian Sports Meet, World Defence Services Athletic Meet, etc since the inception of the Army Athletics Committee in 1950, chaired by Lieutenant Duncan White who bagged the first-ever Olympic Medal for Sri Lanka, have so far secured best laurels, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, a record achievement which no other single establishment in the country has so far attained to-date.

The day’s Chief Guest expressing his happiness over Army Athletic achievements congratulated each of them and distributed trophies and medals to the winners.

Major General Kumudu Perera, Deputy Chief of Staff Sri Lanka Army, Major General Mahinda Mudalige, Commander Security Forces – West and Chairman of Army Athletic Committee, Mr Dammika Muthugala, Director General Sports Development Department, several Senior Officers of the Army and members of the Army Athletic Committee were associated with Wednesday's (28) closing ceremony.
