551 Infantry Brigade troops launched a programme to distribute school accessories for needy children studying at Ponnambalam Vidyalaya, in Karaveddy on Friday (May 19) with the financial assistance provided by 'Steps Charity Foundation' in Australia.
Selected 25 students with special needs received those packs of school items and 55 students in addition received valuable sports items to enhance sports skills during the same distribution ceremony.
The event was organized under the guidance of Major General D.B.S.N Bothota RWP RSP VSV USP psc, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna and Major General M.K.U.P Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, General Officer Commanding of the 55 Infantry Division.
Brigadier S.J Kariyawasam RWP RSP USP, Commander of 551 Infantry Brigade supervised the project and coordinated its launch in cooperation with the Commanding Officer, 4 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (4 SLSR).
Mr Anuradha Wasala Ekanayake, Chairman, 'Steps Charity Foundation', Mr Buddhika Karunanayake, Secretary of 'Steps Charity Foundation' and its members provided the required monetary assistance to the value of Rs. 120,000/=
Commander 551 Infantry Brigade and Zonal Education Director of Vadamarachchi graced the occasion as chief guests, together with the Commanding Officer of 4 SLSR, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, Treasurer of Nelliyadi Trade Union, Government Officials, the Principal with members of the Tutorial staff and students took part in the event.
