55 Division-Organized Football Tournament Draws Participation of Many Northern Sports Clubs

Palai Sports Ground in the Jaffna peninsula, situated in the 55 Division area under the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) became a centre of attraction on Thursday (28) when hundreds of youngsters, representing various north-based sports clubs, competed with one another during a football tournament organized by the 55 Division Headquarters.

Four women’s clubs and eight male sports clubs took part in the tournament, fine tuned by troops of the 20th Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) serving the 551 Brigade Headquarters in the area.

St. Peters Sports Club, Durga Sports Club (men and women), Pudiya Elantharnal Sports Club (men and women), Palai Sports Club - A & B teams (men and women), Palopalai Sports Club and Adisiyam Sports Club - A & B teams (men and women) vied in the tournament that selected Adisiyam Sports Club A team (women’s sector) and St Peters Sports Club team as the best footballers in the tournament.

Award of trophies and prizes to the winners after final tussles took place during the same evening, headed by Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding 55 Division.

The final matches were witnessed by Dr R Sudarshan, Medical Officer at Palai Government Hospital, Inspector R.D.A Rajapaksa, Palai Police Station, 551 Brigade Commander, Senior Officers, Grama Niladari and several others.
