55 Division HQ Makes Elaborate Vesak Projects in the North

In celebration of the Vesak full moon Day, the 55 Infantry Division HQ organized a series of events under the guidance of Major General M.K.U.P Gunarathna RSP ndu psc IG, the General Officer Commanding, 55 Infantry Division.

The events commenced on 4 May 2023 with a Dhamma sermon, followed by the distribution of book packs to 100 school children at Iyyakachchi GTM School on 5 May 2023.

Over 1500 meal packs to the local community were also given away on the same day. Venerable Hanwelle Rathnasiri Thero, the Chief Incumbent at Navatkkuli Temple, conducted a ‘Dhamma’ preaching event to bless the troops serving under the 55 Infantry Division as part of their Vesak programme.

The 552 Infantry Brigade organized a book donation programme at Iyyakachchi GTM School, followed by an ice cream treat for the students. The event was graced by Major General M.K.U.P Gunarathna RSP ndu psc IG and other guests, including Colonel G.D.J.C Premathilaka USP psc, the Commander of the 553 Infantry Brigade, Senior Superintendent of Police Kilinochchi Mr. M.K.R.A Gunaratne, OIC Pallai Police Station Chief Inspector G.C.S.K Kularathne, Mr. A. P Mathan, the Chairman of Tamil Hindu Union Pallai, Mr. M Kajendran the Principal of Iyyakachchi GTM School, and many parents.

Mr. Prasad Lokubalasooriya and his team sponsored those events. The distribution of meal packs, a collaborative effort involved all Brigades under the Division’s command and its staff. The villagers of Vettalakerni, Kaddaikadu and Kevil warmly enjoyed the Vesak hospitality.

Display of Vesak lanterns in front of the 55 Infantry Division HQ at Kaddaikadu was witnessed by Rev Father Amal Raj, the parish priest of Kaddaikau church, as well as government officials and businessmen from the area.
