54 Infantry Division’s New GOC Begins Work

Major General Nalinda Niyangoda on Friday (30 Dec) assumed duties as the new General Officer Commanding, 54 Infantry Division during a brief ceremony at the 54 Infantry Division Headquarters in Mannar.

In accordance with military traditions, Major General Nalinda Niyangoda upon arrival at the premises reviewed the Guard Turnout and paid tribute to the memory of Fallen War Heroes at the monument. Afterwards, he was invited to take the salute of the Guard of Honour, presented by troops of the Gemunu Watch as a formality.

Amid blessings of all four major faiths, the new General Officer Commanding, Major General Nalinda Niyangoda left his signature for a document to symbolize acceptance of his new responsibilities.

After several group photographs, he added memories to the occasion and planted a sapling in the compound.

Setting out his scope of work and duties, the new General Officer Commanding 54 Infantry Division formally addressed all the Officers and Other Ranks serving in the Division and urged them to work with commitment and high standards of discipline.

Commanders of 541, 542 and 543 Infantry Brigades, and Commanding Officers, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks were associated with the day’s inauguration of the office.

Major General Nalinda Niyangoda before this new appointment served as the Commandant at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa.
