54 Infantry Division troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) with the objective of further promoting civil-military cooperation launched a project to provide chilled refreshments and drinking water to over 500 devotees, participating in Mannar St Sebastian Church-organized 'Cavalry Pilgrimage Walk' (foot pilgrimage) on Wednesday (15 March).
The treat, initiated under the guidance of Major General Nalinda Niyangoda, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 54 Infantry Division began at Thallady junction in front of the entrance to the Vikumpura Sinhala Village.
The annual 'Cavalry Pilgrimage Walk' along Mannar-Medawachchiya main road, attended by hundreds of Catholics started from St Sebastian Church compound in Mannar and were to conclude at Komarasankulam Cavalry church in Vavuniya within 2-3 days. Hundreds of devotees from villages, Uyilankulam, Vankalai, Nanattan, Naruvalikulam, and Semmantivu joined the foot pilgrimage. Mannar Bishop and senior Catholic priests blessed the walk befoe its commencement.
Rev (Fr) Kristhunayagam, Vicar General, Mannar, several Nuns, Officers and Other Ranks of the 54 Division, 542 Infantry Brigade troops and devotees were present at the inaugural point.
