54 Division Troops Plant 8603 Saplings in Wilpattu Afforestation Project & Begin to Cover 268 More Acres

Mannar- based 54 Division troops of the Security Force HQ-Wanni in line with the ongoing 'Thru Mithuru Nawa Ratak' afforestation and cultivation programme, conceptualized by the Commander of the Army completed 90 percent of the Wilpattu mega afforestation project, assigned to the Army, having planted 8603 saplings in 76.5 acres under the Phase-1 in four selected zones.

On Saturday (15), the Phase-2 under the guidance of Major General Indrajith Bandara, General Officer Commanding, 54 Division got to a start, intending to plant some 268 more acres under seven more zones. To begin with, teachers and prefects of the Horizon International College in Malabe voluntarily joined hands with the troops and planted 200 saplings in the Kallaru zone in Wilapattu, giving their share to the national afforestation programme. Those College volunteers brought fertilizer, technical equipment and several verities of saplings for planting under the project.

The mega Wilapattu afforestation project was initiated on 18 May 2019 following an initiative of the Army. It received a further boost with the introduction of the incumbent Commander's 'Thru Mithuru-Nawa Ratak' project in December last year.

General Officer Commanding, 54 Division graced the inaugural occasion as the Chief Guest, together with a couple of Senior Officers of the 54 Division, 541 Brigade, Officers and Other ranks who also joined planting those saplings.
