The 4 Armoured Regiment (4 SLAC), Clappenburg, Trincomalee staged a Unit Symposium, the first of its kind on Saturday (26 Aug), themed ‘Modern Trends in Armour Technology and Tactics’.
It was aimed at enhancing knowledge of Officers of the 4 SLAC on the subject while giving them much-needed experience in event-organizing, academic writing and research presentation.
Major General S.W.M Fernando WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc, Military Secretary and Colonel Commandant - SLAC, who was the mentor of the Unit Symposium concept attended as the Chief Guest.
Commencing the day’s proceedings, Lieutenant Colonel D.M.V.M.R Dissanayaka RWP RSP psc, Commanding Officer of 4 SLAC delivered the welcome note before the day’s Chief Guest addressed the symposium and emphasized the importance of acquiring, maintaining and updating the knowledge of the Officers all the time.
Afterwards, academic sessions of the symposium unfolded with the keynote speech delivered by Brigadier A. S. R Wijedasa WWV RSP USP ndc psc which was chaired by a former Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel D.P.A.S.A Witharana psc.
During the first session, Major K.B.S.S.S Bandara psc assisted by Lieutenant T.D.D.S Senapathi and Major P.L.K.M Jayakody psc assisted by Second Lieutenant T.J Wijesekara of 4 SLAC delivered their research findings on Modern Trends in Tank Firepower, Information Systems, Modern Trends in Tank Protection and Mobility, respectively.
The Session Two which discussed modern trends in armour tactics was chaired by another former Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Colonel W.M.I.U.B Weerasekara USP psc. During this session, four more Officers of the Regiment delivered their thoughts and findings.
At first, Lieutenant Colonel U.K.K.W.M.R.A.W.I.A.B Kulatunge psc assisted by Second Lieutenant A.A.S.A Amarasinghe covered the topic, ‘Armour in Offensive Operations in the Modern Battlefield’ and was followed by Major K.M.K Samarasinghe USP psc with the assistance of Second Lieutenant A.T.P Alwis discussing on ‘Armour in Defensive Operations in the Modern Battlefield’.
The Unit Symposium 2023 of the 4 SLAC was summed up by Brigadier K.M.P.S.B Kulatunge RSP ndc psc. Major R Randeniya USP psc, the Second in Command delivered the vote of thanks which marked the culmination of the historic and educative event.
Major General W.W.H.R.R.V.M.N.D.K.B Niyangoda RWP RSP VSV USP ndu psc, Commander Security Forces - Central, Commander Armoured Brigade, Deputy GOC 22 Infantry Division, Commandant Army School of Logistics, Brigade Commanders of 22 Infantry Division, Senior Officers, Officers of 4 SLAC took part in the event.
