28 Years of VIR's Cherished Memories Recalled

Gallantry and unmatched bravery of the Army’s Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) that records the highest number of supreme sacrifices in the 30-year long battle against terrorism, was once again recalled to memory on Thursday (22) during the 28th anniversary commemoration of the VIR Regimental Day, marked at its Boyagane Regimental Headquarters on the guidelines of Colonel of the Regiment, VIR, Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana.

A Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour greeted the Colonel of the Regiment in accordance with military formalities marking the exact anniversary day programme, hours before the Commander of the Army inaugurated a newly-erected billet complex.

Afterwards, Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, in the solemn ceremony that followed, together with the VIR Centre Commandant, Brigadier Srinath Ariyasinghe laid the first floral wreath at the foot of the monument and respected their memory .The replica of the brave standing soldier in the monument symbolizes that he is prepared to emit his energy for the greater benefit of the nation.

A formal troop address at the gymnasium premises, planting of a ‘Ran Thambili’ sapling in the Regimental premises and an All Rank refreshment arrangement ended the first phase of the day’s programme.

An all-night Pirith chanting plus an alms-giving ceremony to 28 monks, was conducted before the military formalities got underway to coincide with the anniversary celebration.

In parallel with the 28th VIR anniversary, troops of the VIR also provided a delicious lunch treat to more than 50 elders and children at Maliyadeva Elders' and Children's home in Kurunegala after the Pirith chanting.

The anniversary celebrations culminated with a mega musical evening at the VIR Regiment Headquarters after the formal visit of the Commander of the Army took place on Saturday (24).
