24 Infantry Division’s Swift Action at Gal Oya Reservoir

Troops of 24 Infantry Division were engaged in flood relief operations at the Gal Oya reservoir near the Oluwil and Galmaduwa areas following an overflow caused by heavy rainfall. This resulted in movement restrictions on the Oluwil-Deegavapiya road and Galoya to Paragahakale road.

Under the guidance of Major General W Chandrasiri RSP USP psc, the General Officer Commanding, 24 Infantry Division, the troops took decisive action to prevent further overflow of the Gal Oya water level. The troops placed sandbags along the reservoir, forming a barrier against the rising water. This collaborative effort involved civilians and consultation with the Irrigation Engineer from the Oluvil Veerayadi Irrigation Office.

Meanwhile, another challenge emerged near Midindupura, where soil erosion exposed the main water supply line for Saindamaradu, Nindavur, and Akkareipattu areas. Recognizing the potential water disruption, troops from the 24 Infantry Division, along with the Sri Lanka Air Force and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, collaborated to address the erosion issue by placing sandbags around the pipeline.
