233 Infantry Brigade troops of the 23 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ – East (SFHQ – East) launched one more community project to distribute packs of nutrients among 80 pregnant women of low-income group families, residing in Welikanda area on Thursday (23 Nov) after inviting them to the Welikanda Cultural Centre.
At the request of the Commander, SF – East, Mr Saminda Jayathillake, a Sri Lankan patriot, based in Australia spent over Rs. 600,000/= to arrange 80 packs, each worth more than Rs. 7,500/=
The project was initiated on a conceptual notion of Major General M.K.U.P Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, Commander, SF – East and was carried out by Lieutenant Colonel M.I.S Chandrakumara USP psc IG, Commanding Officer of 9 Sri Lanka Artillery under the guidance of Colonel A.K.C.S De Silva RSP, Commander, 233 Infantry Brigade of the 23 Infantry Division.
Each bag contained cereals, grains, dried fish, milk powder packets, eggs, canned fish, spices, baby needs, soap, soya meats, etc.
At the same time, a needy student studying at Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya who excelled during the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination was awarded a scholarship, a cash grant of Rs. 10,000.00 every month until the student completes her Advanced Level Examination. One Mr. Janith Bandara took the responsibility of the sponsorship at the request of Major General M.K.U.P Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG.
The Commander, SF – East graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, together with the sponsor, Mr Saminda Jayathilake, the Guest of Honour.
Major General K.V.N.P. Premaratne RSP USP psc, General Officer Commanding, 23 Infantry Division, Commander, 233 Infantry Brigade, Senior Officers, Officers, government officials in the area and a large crowd also took part in the event.
