Troops serving 222 Brigade in Jayanthigama, Kantale conducted a series of community-oriented and meritorious projects with the support of several donors in the civil sector in the past few weeks.
At Jayanthigama Jayabodhi Viharaya, troops gave away pairs of spectacles to 157 civilians who have impaired vision after they were selected from medical clinics, conducted at this temple itself and Ichchalanpattu Government Hospital earlier.
Donation of religious offerings to Suriyapura Nadee Viharaya, wheelchairs to Tamil children and parcels of dry rations to needy families, etc also took place on the same occasion on the sidelines of the distribution of spectacles.
Ven Ratmalane Medhankara Thero, Ms Doingo of Ratmalana and George Gunaratne Opticians (Pvt) Ltd sponsored purchase of spectacles and other items for distribution among selected poor families.
Meanwhile, the same 222 Brigade troops recently donated a commode set and sanitary accessories to Jayanthigama Sri Jayabodhi Viharaya, in response to a request made by the high priest at the temple.
In the meantime, 222 Brigade troops on the directions of Major General Lal Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, East took steps to distribute a stock of dry food items and other essentials among resettled families and those still staying in camps, awaiting return to their homesteads.
Meanwhile, 222 Brigade actively supported a religious programme, named Mau Piya Guna Wandana - Guna Mehewara organized by Ven Viharagama Sirinanda Thero at Velunna Rajamaha Vihara for the spiritual development of children in the area. The Army provided transport and refreshments to all those who attended the religious programme.
General Officer Commanding, 22 Division Brigadier Darshana Hettiarachchi, 222 Brigade Commander, Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, 222 Brigade Civil Affairs Coordinator, Lieutenant Colonel H.S Karunatillake, Senior Commanding Officers, Government Officials and leading citizens in the area separately attended those ceremonies and different projects, coordinated on the instructions of the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, East.
