221 Brigade Gets Philanthropists to Donate School Accessories to Needy Children

Troops of the 221 Brigade of the 22 Division under the Security Force Headquarters – East (SFHQ-E) held a donation programme for under-privileged students in Morawewa area at the Morawewa Yaya-06 School auditorium on Tuesday (9) with the sponsorship, provided by several civil sector donors.

This community-oriented empowering programme was an initiative aimed at encouraging education of the children in less-privileged families and schools in Morawewa Divisional Secretariat.

It was conducted in line with the series of community-oriented welfare programmes organized by the Sri Lanka Army with the aim of supporting the livelihoods of poor families.

The Chief Guest to the occasion, Major General Aruna Jayasekara, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 22 Division and Senior Officers on arrival were warmly welcomed by teachers and students in the schools. The proceedings formally commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp and the welcome note, being read out by the school principal. Coordination for donors was also done by the GOC considering the importance of the offer.

Subsequently, 175 students of Morawewa Yaya 06 School, Morawewa North Sinhala School, Mailawewa School, Pulikandikulama School and Pamburugaswewa School were offered essential stationery items and shoes to the value of Rs 2 lakhs. This worthy project was initiated under the instructions of the Brigade Commander, 221 Brigade, Brigadier Sumith Premalal.

Students and teachers appreciated the efforts taken by the Army to lend their assistance to uplift educational facilities of needy families in Morawewa and were full of praise to the organizers.

The day's proceedings concluded with tea offered by parents of the students.

Brigade Commanders of 221, 222, 224 Brigades, Commanding Officers, Officers, principals, teachers, parents and students attended the ceremony.
