22 Division Launches Tree Planting Project With Children

To synchronize with the government’s national tree planting campaign, ‘Deyata Sevana’ that commemorated the President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s assumption of office, the 22 Division in Trincomalee organized a mammoth tree planting project with students from 9 schools.

More than 300 students from Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim schools in the district after assembling at Trincomalee Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya, conducted a procession carrying banners and placards, related to importance of environmental conservation and tree planting up to the 22 Division Headquarters premises.

The day’s ceremony at 22 Division Headquarters began afterwards with the hoisting of the National flag, Environment flag and the Division flag respectively.

The programme, organized under the auspices of Brigadier Dharshana Hettiarachchi, General Officer Commanding, 22 Division, was attended by Mr V.P. Balasingham, Chief Secretary for Provincial Council - East, Major General (Retd) T.T.R. De Silva, District Secretary for Trincomalee and several other senior state officials.

The ceremony began after recital of the National anthem and the Environment song before the environment pledge was read out.

All the invitees and participating students planted more than 500 saplings in the 22 Division premises on the same occasion before they sat down to attend a workshop that highlighted the importance of conservation of the environment.

Towards the end of the day’s programme, a gift parcel containing school books, plus a jak sapling was given away to each participating student. Those gifts were sponsored jointly by Trincomalee Bank of Ceylon, People’s Bank and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka at the request of the organizers of the day’s event.

A huge gathering including many state officials and private sector officials took part in the project.
