On an initiative of the troops, a combined sponsorship enabled 2 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and 211 Infantry Brigade troops of the 21 Infantry Division under the Security Force Headquarters-Wanni to erect a suitable house for a deserving mother with three children in Medawachchiya area who was desperately living in a shanty, made of wattle and daub.
The combined sponsorship to the value of Rs 3.5 million, extended by Merchant Naval Engineer, Mr. M.S Abeywickrama, Principal and Staff of the Royal College Colombo-7 and clergy at Medawachchiya Catholic Church resulted in the purchase of raw materials, needed for the construction.
The Divisional Secretariat at Medawachchiya at the request of the troops allocated a land block of 20 perches for this community project and Royal College staff coordinated the entire sponsorship in collaboration with the 211 Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier Chaminda Wijayarathne.
The beneficiary, Mrs M.L.Tharanga Sandamali, a widowed mother of three children was without a proper shelter and was living in a hut, made of wattle and daub when the troops observed their hardships and living condition. Through the Grama Seva official's recommendation, the Divisional Secretariat for Medawachchiya provided 20 perch land for the construction after troops promised to build the house.
On Tuesday (2 May), the new house was vested in the family during a brief ceremony, attended by the Priest at Medawachchiya Catholic Church, Anuradhapura Additional District Secretary Mrs. Sandya Abeysekara, 211 Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier A.M.C.P Wijayarathne RWP RSP psc, Chief donor, Mr. M.S Abeywickrama, Principal of the Royal College, Colombo Mr. R.M.M.Rathnayake, Medawachchiya Divisional Secretary, Mrs. M.C Malaviarachchi, Civil Affairs Officer of the 211 Infantry Brigade, 2nd In Command, 2 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and Other Ranks.
