20th Army Novices Athletic Championship Brings its Curtains Down

The 20th Army Novices Athletic Championship drew to a close this evening (20) with new hopes and encouraging records at Sugathadasa Stadium where Major General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Staff graced as the day's Chief Guest.

400 plus athletes from various Army regiments vied in the race for championship during 19-20 March, the annual Army event that makes new athletic records that would qualify them to enter national/international track and field events.

Major General Sudath Perera, Chairman Army athletic Committee received the day's Chief Guest and delivered the welcome note.

This year's Army Novices Athletic Championship was grabbed by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps with 139 points, pushing Gemunu Watch and Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment athletes to 2nd and 3rd places by collecting 134 & 84 points respectively.

Meanwhile, 2 (volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC) was crowned as female Champions this year with 105 points and 7 SLAWC and Sri Lanka SL Signal Corps Women athletes secured the 2nd and 3rd places with 100 & 64 points respectively.

New 9 meet records were made during two days amid roars of applause and cheers of the onlookers.

Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Commander SF-East, Major General C.S Atipola, Logistic Commander, Major General L.F Kasthuriarachchi, Deputy Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Fareez Yusuf, Director General Army Band and Performing Arts, Centre Commandants, senior officers and officers attended this event.

Chief of Staff formally announced the culmination of the 20th Army Novices Athletic Championship -2019.
