The Commander of the Army and Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, symbolically handed over the reins of his office as the Colonel of the Regiment to his successor, Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, by presenting him with a replica of the Baton, signifying the relinquishment of office as Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment.
Accordingly, on Thursday (26), Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc assumed office as the 14th Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment in a simple and formal ceremony held at the Gajaba Regimental Centre, Saliyapura, Anuradhapura, at an auspicious time.
Upon the arrival of the Colonel of the Regiment at the Regimental Centre, he was honoured in a Guard Turnout, followed by a floral tribute at the statue of the Founding Father of the Gajaba Regiment, the late Major General W.I.V.K.M Wimalarathne RWP RSP VSV USP psc. Thereafter, the Colonel of the Regiment symbolised the acceptance of his responsibilities by signing an official document amidst the chanting of Pirith. As part of the tradition, he planted a sapling on the camp premises to mark this memorable day. Subsequently, all Officers posed for a group photograph with the Colonel of the Regiment.
The day’s events concluded with an All-Ranks tea, followed by an address to the Officers by the Colonel of the Regiment. Overall, it was a simple and dignified ceremony, held in line with the rich traditions and customs of this prestigious Regiment.
