12 Division Now Takes to Tree Planting in Wellawaya Hilly Areas

Troops in the 12 Division of the Security Force Headquarters - Central, together with 121 Brigade, 20 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 18 Gemunu Watch troops to be in parallel with the ongoing ‘Husma Dena Thuru’ (Trees that give breath) national project, launched jointly by the Central Environment Authority, Ministry of Environment and the Army on Thursday (27) planted 500 saplings of rare species in the general hilly areas of Sapugoda Kanda in the general area of Wellawaya.

On the direction of the General Officer Commanding, 12 Division, Major General Hemantha Bandara hilly areas gutted by a spate of recent bush-fires were selected to plant those saplings, like Mee, Eth Demata, Madam, etc which were organic plants under this 12 Division-initiated programme.

The new afforestation project expects to plant 2 million saplings across the country and increase the country’s forest-cover by 30 percent as set out in HE the President’s ‘Sawubhagye Dekma’ (Vistas of splendor and prosperity) policy statement.
