100 More Scholarships Awarded Under SVAU's 2014 Programme

Award of 100 more scholarships, each worth Rs 5000/= to students of War Hero families under the annual scholarship award - 2014 project of the Seva Vanitha Army Unit (SVAU), took place Thursday (13) morning at BMICH with Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the SVAU.

Following the warm welcome, extended by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, SVAU to the Chief Guest on arrival at the premises, proceedings of the day got underway giving foremost respect to the memory of all fallen War Heroes with a one-minute silence upon lighting of the traditional oil lamp.

It followed recital of the Seva Vanitha theme song that speaks of Seva Vanitha welfare services and dedication to the greater good of War Heroes of the Army and family members of theirs.

An entertaining feature of a talented student of a War Hero family, subsequent to the formal welcome address, set the stage for screening of a video production, prepared by Prime Grameen Micro Finance Limited which has come forward to have those scholarship savings deposited on behalf of the SVAU.

A brief address by Mr B. Premalal, Chairman, Prime Grameen Micro Finance Limited outlined why the company resolved to assist this worthy project, considering the great dedication and the commitment, made by War Heroes for defence of the country.

Mr Sudath Tennekoon, Chairman, Central Bearing Company Limited who has made available grants for the SVAU project on behalf of those recipients was also warmly received.

Each student in the age range of 3-5 years has been given a deposit of Rs 5,000/= and after that each was supposed to get Rs 10,000/= as the scholarship until completion of their higher studies. 

On the same occasion, the SVAU won plaudits for its welfare roles from the Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) and SLCMP Seva Vanitha Unit when all of them volunteered to make financial donations to the SVAU for promotion of their welfare services.

Accordingly, Major General Lal Perera, Commander, SFHQ-E, Major General E.K.J.K Wijesiri, Provost Marshal, SLCMP and Mrs Wijesiri, Chairperson, SLCMP Seva Vanitha Unit, respectively presented cheques to the value of Rs 1 million, Rs 1 million and Rs 5 lakhs to the Chief Guest who in turn, handed them over to the President, SVAU.

The momentous occasion that arose afterwards saw distribution of those scholarships among War Hero children. Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, SVAU, Mrs Nayana de Silva, Vice President, SVAU, Major General E.P. de Z Abeysekara and Mrs Abeysekara, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Signal Corps Seva Vanitha Unit took part in the distribution.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army during his brief address called upon the attendees to keep on shining in studies since that would be the best fitting tribute that could be made on behalf of their fallen, disable or still serving War Heroes.

On the same occasion, the SVAU donated special artificial legs and limbs to three spouses of serving War Heroes in the Army. All those amputees received the accessories from the distinguished guests.
