“Sri Lankan Military Defeated LTTE Terrorism 10 Years ago but Few Tamil Politicians Still Propagate Its Ideology” - Defence Secretary

Defence Secretary Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne said although the Sri Lankan military had completely defeated LTTE terrorism militarily 10 years ago, the challenge of defeating its separatist ideology still remains as some Tamil politicians are attempting to propagate it in the minds of Tamil people.

He said so when the visiting Zambian Army Chief Lieutenant General W.M Sikazwe paid a courtesy call on him this morning (25) at the Ministry of Defence.

Secretary Defence also said that aspirations of majority common Tamil people are different from the ideology of those politicians since it was the innocent Tamil people who were battered under LTTE terrorism and they do not want a separate country. But some Tamil politicians want devolution of power, Major General (Retd) Gunaratne added during the meeting.

Referring to military expertise that used in the final war to end terrorism in the country, he said the LTTE terrorists were using asymmetric warfare tactics and the Sri Lankan military had to develop its own asymmetric warfare, which reduced the LTTE to merely an ideology after mid-2009.

He also highlighted the lasting relationship between the two nations, which dates back to the heydays of the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM).

Similarly, the Zambian Lieutenant General Sikazwe sought the possibility of sharing the expertise and experiences of the Sri Lankan military as a furtherance to the existing Sri Lanka-Zambia military relations.

“Zambian military would greatly be benefited by the Sri Lankan military’s innovative asymmetric warfare tactics”, the visiting Army Chief told the Secretary Defence.

In response, the Secretary Defence informed Lieutenant General Sikazwe of the possibility of offering training to Zambian Special Forces by providing Sri Lankan Special Forces’ expertise on ‘Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) ’and the specialized module on ‘Survival, Escape, Evasion and Combat Tracking’.

Major General (Retd) Gunaratne added the Ministry was willing to facilitate if the Zambian Army required a team of Sri Lankan military instructors to conduct sessions at their staff colleges. Towards the end of the cordial meeting, Secretary Defence presented a copy of his book on ‘Road to Nanthikadal’ and a memento. The gesture was reciprocated.

At present, six Officer Cadets and one lady officer in the rank of Major from the Zambian Army are undergoing training at Sri Lankan military establishments, including the Kotelawala Defence University.

Lieutenant General Sikazwe is on a five day visit to the island since 21 February with a Zambian Army delegation which includes Brigadier General Simusandu, Defence Attaché High Commission of Zambia, New Delhi, India, Brigadier General G Ng’andwe, Director General Training, Colonel Leonard Peter Daka, Deputy Director General Policy Doctrine and Strategy, Colonel Jethrow Chipili, Director Zambia Defence University, Colonel T Banda, Chief Instructor Staff College, Lieutenant Colonel M Shapwaya, Commandant Special Forces School and Captain M Mulenga, Aide-De-Camp.
