'Viru Daru Stride' Walk to be Coloured with Various Segments

The countdown to the forthcoming ‘Viru Daru Stride - 2012’ Walk on May 26, organized jointly by Viru Daru Society of Army families and Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), has now begun with elaborate arrangements in place.   

The first ‘Viru Daru Stride - 2012’ Walk to begin from the Galle Face green with the participation of hundreds of children of Ranaviru families will cover a distance of about 8 km along Kompannaveediya road, Gangarama road, Pittala junction, Liberty roundabout, Duplication road, Bambalapitiya, Galle road, Kollupitiya and return to Galle Face, it was announced during a press conference Thursday (17) afternoon at Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) Regiment auditorium at Colombo 2.

Ms Deshani Jayasuriya, Chairperson, Viru Daru Society speaking to the press, outlined the objective of the ‘Viru Daru Stride - 2012’ Walk and explained various segments that would be joining the Walk on Saturday (26). She was flanked by Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Treasurer and a few more main office-bearers of the Viru Daru Society.  

Army’s pachyderms, horses and sniffing dogs as well as different models with fancy dresses, together with a group of disable War Heroes, are expected to add colour and variety to the walk.

The whole project, to be launched with the blessings of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch, is aimed at promoting awareness of the well-being of children of War Hero families and raising funds for various Viru Daru welfare projects, the gathering was told.

‘Viru Daru Stride - 2012’ Walk also expects to provide psychological counseling to war affected children of both War Hero families and civilians in the north and east as one more major project to be executed with the funds generated through the walk, Ms Jayasuriya told the Media.
 
In addition, the Viru Daru society expects to promote educational skills and vocational training facilities of those youngsters while rebuilding sense of hope, confidence, social security and financial capacity, etc.

A brief presentation of the Viru Daru society’s past and future projects enlightened the attendees. Maliban Biscuits Company Ltd, the main sponsor of the ‘Viru Daru Stride - 2012’ Walk assured its continued support to the Viru Daru projects in the future too.
