'Ranaviru' Commemorative Month Commences with Its Flag Release at Temple Trees

The annual ‘War Hero’ (Ranaviru) commemoration month, organized jointly by Ministry of Defence and Urban Development and Ranaviru Seva Authority commenced on Friday (2) after the first Ranaviru flag was pinned on HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces during a brief ceremony at Temple Trees.   

The Ranaviru flag month coincides with elaborate War Hero commemorative programmes across the country that would reach its apex with the Victory Day (Vijeyagrahi Pelapaliya) parade, this year at Matara on 18 May and the subsequent War Hero memorial service at Sri Jayawardenapura ‘Ranaviru’ Monument, the following day and continues till 2 June 2014.

Miss K.P Senanga Nuwanthi,the daughter of late Corporal K.P Nuwan Tharanga who made the supreme sacrifice in Mannar while fighting against terrorism in 2007, pinned the first Ranaviru flag symbolically on President Mahinda Rajapaksa before a distinguished gathering of invitees. At the same occasion, a representative group of relatives presented a tribute to the President who is also the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces.

During the ceremony, Governors of respective regions handed over the income they collected from the sale of Ranaviru flags last year to the President who subsequently gave away the collection to Mrs Padma Wettewa, Chairperson, Ranaviru Seva Authority.

At the same occasion, symbolic pouches, containing Ranaviru flags for the year 2014 were awarded to Governors of respective regions.

To be in line with the month-long project, President Rajapaksa during the same occasion, inaugurated a new pilot scheme for provision of scholarships to children of War Heroes who became qualified to enter universities after successfully passing the G.C.E (A/L) Examination.  

All Governors representing nine provinces, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Mrs Padma Wettewa, Chairperson, Ranaviru Seva Authority, General Jagath Jayasuriya, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Air Marshal  KA Gunatilleke, Commander of the Air Force, Mr N.K Illangakoon, Inspector General of the Police, Navy Chief of Staff, senior Ministry of Defence officials and a gathering of invitees attended the occasion.
