Devotees in Mullaittivu had the rare chance of giving true meaning to reconciliation, co-existence and spiritual understanding when both Hindus and Sinhalese, joined hands together to mark both Poson Full Moon Poya day and the Pongal festival at Wattapalai Kannaki Amman Kovil which fell coincidentally during June 1 - 2.
59 Division troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) on the guidelines given by Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Overlooking Commander, SFHQ-MLT offered coriander water drink free of charge to more than 5000 devotees who were attending the Kovil Pooja on Monday (1) evening.
Again, a rice breakfast (Dansela) was served to thousands of devotees who were returning home upon conclusion of the overnight Kovil Pooja. Soldiers of the 59 Division gave this treat to the devotees at the entrance to the Wattapalai Kannaki Amman Kovil. All units in the area supported the mega Dansela held for two days to coincide with the Poson ceremony which marks the arrival of Ven Arahanth Mahinda in Sri Lanka some thousands years ago.
On the Poson Full Moon Day, Ven Ranawana Dhamminda Thero of Ethawetunuwewa Udumbararamaya temple delivered a special Dhamma sermon to hundreds of soldiers who gathered at the Muladeepa Buddhist temple inside the SFHQ-MLT premises.
All the troops serving 64 and 68 Divisions of the SFHQ-MLT meanwhile conducted their own Poson programmes, inclusive of free food distribution (Dansel), donations, Bodhi Poojas, religious observances, etc to mark the significance of Poson Poya day.
Colourful illuminations decorated Army formations in respective areas of the SFHQ-MLT. Senior officers including commanding officers of various formations attended the inaugural occasions of these ceremonies.
