'Foxhill Green' Phase 1 Kicked Off in Diyatalawa

The first phase of the Diyatalawa ‘Foxhill Green’ Reforestation Project, initiated by the Security Force Headquarters-Central (SFHQ-C), kicked off Friday (24) morning at ‘Foxhill’ mountain range, Diyatalawa after a brief ceremony.

In addition to 550 Tri-service personnel and the Police, a total of about 75 civil sector environmental activists, 40 school students and invited guests joined the ‘Foxhill Walk’ from the Polo grounds at the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) with enthusiasm. Major General Sumedha Perera, Commander, SFHQ-C flagged off the event and joined the walk with others.

Major General Perera as the Chief Guest for the occasion afterwards made the welcome speech and spelt out the motive behind the reforestation programme in Nariya Kanda range before commencement of the event in 13 selected places along the mountain range.

He together with other invited guests, including District Secretary for Badulla, Mr. Yasarath Kamalsiri, Director/General Manager, Capital Maharaja Organization, Mr. S.C. Weerasekara, Group Director, Capital Maharaja Organization, Major General Mano Perera, Commander, Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Brigadier R.W.W.A.D.B. Rajaguru, Commandant, SLMA and several other senior officers, attended the inaugural phase of the project.
 
A total of 1200 tree saplings such as Kamaranka, Kumbuk, Mee, Ambul Pera, Jak, etc were planted in most wanted areas of the range of nearly 2300 acres where a number of sports and racing events of the Army and services take place throughout the year.

The project was initiated under the objective of preserving the ecological system in the Foxhill area, now under threat due to increased human activities such as the overuse, encroachment, deforestation, natural soil erosion, etc. 

Major General Sumedha Perera underlined the importance of preserving the ecological balance in the area for the sake of our future generations as well as those still serving the armed forces. In his speech to the occasion, he reminded that Diyatalawa is the home for thousands of officers in tri-services and that it should be preserved. He also thanked the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva for taking a personal interest in the project and his support. 

The event concluded with award of appreciative mementos to the sponsors of the event by the SFHQ-C Commander.
