Final arrangements are underway to ceremonially hold the Defence Services Sports Meet - 2012 on September 01 at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo on a grand scale.
Athletes serving the Army, Navy and Air Force who had earlier obtained laurels at national and international events, including the Asian Games, have already begun participating in specific events when the tournament, got underway a few days ago.
Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket, Kabaddi, Karate, Parachuting, Sailing, Rugby, Football, Swimming, Squash, Table Tennis, Water Games, Weight Lifting, Gymnastics, Wushu and several other athletic events, will choose the best out of more than 1000 servicemen and women competing for supremacy in the tournament.
To this date, the Army has won the first place in handball (men and women) while Sri Lanka Air Force sportsmen and women shone in Boxing, Hockey (men), Judo (women), Netball, Shooting (men) and Body-building in the ongoing tournament. Sri Lanka Navy in the meantime, has won the first place in Cycling, Hockey (women), Judo (men) and Shooting (women).
Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development is expected to inaugurate the mega event on September 1 ceremonially and the Minister of Sports Mr Mahindananda Aluthgamage is to grace the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest on September 5, 2012.
