  • Naguleshwaran Hindu Temple in HSZ Opened for Public Offerings

    NAGULESHWARAN Hindu temple in Keeramalai, Jaffna which remained closed for public for more than thirty years was re-opened again on 15th December 2009 for offerings and rites and rituals as the peace has now dawned into the Jaffna peninsula following eradication of terrorism from the country. This Hindu temple, situated inside the High Security Zone (HSZ) in Palaly, close to the beach is of historic value in Hindu tradition.   • British High Commission First Secretary Meets Wanni Commander

    THE first Secretary in the British High Commission in Colombo Ms Jane Barham visited Wanni on 15th December 2009 and met Commander Security Forces Wanni Major General Kamal Gunaratne at the Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni). Their discussions mainly focused on the progress of resettlement work in the North and welfare of civilians in Relief villages in Wanni.....

  • Marriage Anniversary Marks Gifting of a House to a Disable War Hero

    THE foundation stone for construction of a new house for a partly disable War Hero was laid by Mrs. Rani Jayathilaka, President Seva Vanitha Sinha Regiment Unit Thursday morning (17) in Kiribathkumbura, Kandy. The sponsorship for the construction was to be borne by Mr and Mrs Gunaratne of Kandy on the eve of their forthcoming 50th marriage anniversary. They expect to complete the construction work and hand over the house to the War Hero Lance Corporal D.M.A.P. Dissanayake on 28th February 2010, the day of their marriage anniversary.....

  • MIC War Hero Children Receive Schols

    THE Army Military Intelligence Corps (MIC) Seva Vanitha Unit conducted its annual War Hero felicitation ceremony on 11th December 2009 at MIC Regimental Center. Chief Guest on the occasion was Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB). As part of the day’s programme, children from War Hero families of the Regiment whose fathers have had a heroic death  or had gone missing in action during the height of military operations received thirty-nine scholarships.....

  • Injured VIR War Heroes Receive Warmth From Seva Vanitha

    THE VIJAYABAHU Infantry Regiment (VIR) Seva Vanitha Unit recently organized several donations for those receiving rehabilitation at Ranaviru Sevana, Ragama. Mrs. Nilanthi De Silva, President Vijayabahu Infantry Seva Vanith Unit, accompanied by several Seva Vanitha members went to see those recuperating soldiers and handed them an electronic wheelchair, worth Rs. 300,000/= plus cash donations and several other items. This special wheelchair is to be given for the use of Private T. Dayarathna of 9 VIR, a totally paralyzed War Hero who is also partly blind due to terrorist attacks during the height of humanitarian operations.      

  • Jaffna-Colombo Bus Fleet Swells Fast

    RELAXATION of restrictions on transport and movement of the civilians moving either northward or southwards along A9 road on public and private buses after an absence of near three decades continues to attract thousands of commuters. An estimated 3404 passengers, bound for Jaffna used 60 buses along A 9 highway during Thursday (17th December 2009), a record after the A 9 was secured crushing LTTE terrorism. 20 buses including 4 luxury ones started off from Colombo and reached Jaffna.....

    THE Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) Regiment who were always in the forefront in times of war and peace in Sri Lanka for the last 30 years marked its 20th anniversary on 18th December 2009 evening at its Regimental Centre, Army cantonment in Panagoda. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Mr. Lalith Weeratunga, the Secretary to HE the President. He was received on arrival by the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Light Infantry Major General Daya Rathnayake..

  • Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Pays Tribute to Sinha Regiment War Heroes

    SRI LANKA Army Sinha Regiment (SLSR) commemorated War Heroes who sacrificed their lives for the Motherland. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya the Commander of Sri Lanka Army attended the occasion as Chief Guest on Saturday (19). The Army Commander was welcomed by the Regimental Commander of the Sinha Regiment Major General D.R.A.B. Jayathilake on arrival and was accorded a guard turnout and a Guard of Honour by the officers and soldiers of the Regiment. It was followed by a floral tribute to the SLSR Monument, erected in commemoration of SLSR War Heroes. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs Jayasuriya placed floral wreaths and paid their tribute. The Senior Officers, officers, other ranks and family members of the fallen War Heroes followed them. Afterwards Lieutenant General Jayasuriya read out a message sent by Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa....

  • Unrestricted Travel on A9 From Today

    ALL restrictions for travel on the A9 road to and from Jaffna will be lifted from today and the Government was taking all steps to develop Jaffna to its former status as one of the best district capitals of the country Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP said yesterday. At a meeting organized by the All Ceylon Hindu Congress in Colombo he said though the attack by Al Qaeda on the US was many years ago the US had not relaxed security to prevent a repetition.

  • Jaffna Mosque Returned to Muslims After 13 Years


    THE Mosque situated in Sinnakkadai Beach Road in Jaffna has been handed over to the Muslims of the area by the Army after 13 years. The Mosque was taken for military use in 1996 since it was located within the security zone during the war. The Army has now moved out of the Mosque premises and the local Muslims were trying to resume conducting prayers again in the Mosque. As a move to clean and restore the Mosque the Manippay Road Mosque Jamaath had involved volunteers in a cleaning campaign.
