  • UK Supports Mine Clearance in Sri Lanka

    THE UK THURSDAY announced new support to clear northern Sri Lanka of thousands of mines and unexploded bombs left over from decades of fighting, British Government’s News Distribution Service said on its web edition. It said: "The Department for International Development will give the Mines Advisory Group a £500,000 grant to help survey minefields and pinpoint unexploded ordinance so they can be safely disposed of. Mines were widely used during the conflict and are scattered across many areas in the North and East of the country. With DFID’s funding, MAG will be able to survey and help clear villages, roads and agricultural land in the northern areas worst affected by the conflict.

    KUMARAN PATHMANATHAN alias as KP, now in Sri Lankan government custody has claimed that his attempts to convince his predecessor Velupillai Prabhakaran to lay down arms and come to a negotiated settlement with the Rajapaksa government hadn’t been successful. Disassociating himself from Prabhakaran-led military campaign, Pathmanathan has said that he told the LTTE leader there would be no ``military solution’’ in the Tigers’ favour.

  • Madhu Church Festival Begins

    VAVUNIYA: THE first MADHU festival after the heroic troops liberated the north and east from the clutches of LTTE terrorists began on a grand scale on Saturday (8) with the arrival of 1071 pilgrims to the Holy Church.  Those pilgrims consisted of 481 males, 368 females, 132 girls and 90 boys. They came on 68 light vehicles and 20 heavy vehicles. Security Forces facilitated them to enter the MADHU area.

  • Maldivian Defence Minister & Indian Defence Advisor Visit Wanni

    IN order to review the progress on rehabilitation and resettlement projects in Wanni area, Maldivian Defence Minister Mr. Ameen Fisar and Defence Advisor to Indian government Mr. Pradeep Singh flew to Vavuniya on Friday (7). During their visit, they met Brigadier Administration and Quartering of the Security Forces Headquarters-Wanni, Brigadier S. Ranasinghe and discussed matters pertaining to rehabilitation and resettlement of the IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons), presently housed in Relief Villages in Vavuniya and elsewhere.

    THE DEFENCE MINISTRY seeks public assistance to arrest this female LTTE cadre who has infiltrated in the guise of a Muslim to launch a suicide bomb attack in the Colombo area. This woman identifying herself as Abdul Salaam Fathima Yasmin is from Old Moor Street, Colombo 12. She is also in possession of an identity card bearing the number 857835641 V with the date of birth as 1985.10.09. Any information leading to her arrest can be passed onto the following telephone numbers or the Director of Terrorist Investigation Unit, Second Floor, Police Headquarters,.....

  • They Continue To Collect More LTTE Arms & Ammunition

    WANNI: ARMY troops operating in the WANNI conducted search and clear operations in the general areas of VISUAMADU, PUTHUKKUDIYIRIPPU, SUGANDIPURAM and KUPPILANKULAM and recovered one .22 weapon, seven T-56 weapons, one thermo baric weapon, one T-90 weapon, one locally-made “Pasilan-2000” launcher with one shell, twenty T-97 magazines, two T-56 magazines, three hundred and fifty electric detonators, one thousand and nine rounds of 9 mm pistol ammunition, five hundred and fifty rounds of .45 mm pistol ammunition.....

  • Giant Tank Renovation Work Assisted by Army in Full Swing

    THE renovation work on the largest tank ‘Yodawewa’ (Giant Tank) in the Mannar “Rice Bowl” began recently under “Uthuru Wasanthaya” development programme of the Government is in full swing. This huge tank with a water capacity of 9545 m3 has remained abandoned and dilapidated since 1892 until the menace of terrorism was ended in May 2009. This ancient tank can pump its water to more than 162 small lakes in the areas surrounding the Rice Bowl. Senior Advisor to the President Basil Rajapaksa (MP) along with a team of ministers, parliamentarians and administrators on Sunday (9) visited the area on an inspection tour. The visiting delegates, accompanied by irrigational engineers saw for themselves how repair work and de-mining work were being carried out jointly by the Army and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). 

  • Army Supports Conduct of A/L Examination

    THE Army in Jaffna in coordination with Sri Lanka Air Force well in advance got down question papers for students sitting the G.C.E (A/L) and the Grade 5 scholarship examination and ensured their safe delivery to Department of Education in Jaffna. About nine thousand five hundred and sixty-four students are expected to sit for the G.C.E A/L examination this year in Jaffna. The examination is scheduled to begin on 11th August and continue till 5th September 2009.

  • Troops Collect More LTTE Arms & Ammo

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY troops engaged in search and clear operations in PUTHUKKUDEDIYIRUPPU and SUGANDIPURAM areas on Monday (10) recovered six T-56 weapons, two T-56 magazines, filled with ammunition, one 12.7 weapon, three micro pistols with two magazines, one hundred and twenty-seven rounds of micro pistol ammunition, fifty-nine T-56 ammunition boxes, eighteen rounds of armour tank ammunition, fifty anti personnel mines, three .22 magazines, one barrel of a pedal gun, seventeen field books in Tamil, one hand grenade, seven 81 mm mortar bombs, two 120 mm mortar bombs, thirty Oxygen cylinders and three radio communication sets.
