  • Royal College Felicitates Two of Her Proud Old Boys; Army Commander & Navy Commander

    A CEREMONY was organized by Royal College Colombo on Tuesday (04) to felicitate two of its proud products, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, who played a pivotal role in fighting terrorism during victoriously concluded Wanni Humanitarian war. These two distinguished old Royalists were received at the entrance by the principal of the college and accompanied to the College War Memorial in a colourful procession preceded by the College Cadet Band. After paying floral tribute to the fallen old Royalists who laid their lives for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland, two military chiefs were honoured by Royal Scouts with Grand Yell.

  • Valachchena Buddhist Temple Restored

    THE ancient Valachchena Buddha Jayanthi Viharaya, administered by historic Dimbulagala monastery was renovated and handed over to the Buddhist clergy during the weekend after the Army took initiative in this connection.  Repairs to this Buddhist Vihara were carried out by the Army under the auspices of the Security Forces Commander for the East Major General S M D A Rajapaksha. The first Buddha Pooja after restoration was performed by Major General Rajapaksha on the Nikini Full Moon Poya Day along with a group of senior Army officers.

  • Anti-Aircraft Gun Found

    NORTH: ARMY troops conducted search and clear operations in the general areas of MANKULAM, PALAYADIKULAM, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, SANGEDIKULAM and KUPPILANKULAM and recovered four LTTE T-56 weapons, one pistol, one anti aircraft gun, one 81 mm mortar booby trap, sixteen hand grenades, seven-thousand-three hundred and fifty rounds of T-56 ammunition, three hundred and fifty rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, one 12.7 mm drum, one T-56 magazine, one hundred and sixty rounds of M-16 ammunition, one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher.....

  • Tip-off Leads to Gold Finds

    EAST: POLICE intelligence section in BATTICALOA on a tip-off conducted a search in NARAKAMULLA, THOPPIGALA area on Wednesday (5) and recovered Rs.1.5 million worth money, two gold rings, two gold ear rings, one gold bangle and one gold chain kept hidden in the area by LTTE terrorists. Meanwhile, troops engaged in a search and clear operation in the general area of ETHULAKULAM recovered fourteen T-56 weapons, one sniper gun, three claymore mines, twenty-eight T-56 magazines, four sniper weapon magazines.....

  • Sri Lanka - Myanmar Joint Commission: Condemns Terrorism and Pledges Support

    THE Second Meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Myanmar was held in Colombo on August 4 presided by Foreign Ministers Rohitha Bogollagama and U Nyan Win. The Joint Commission between Sri Lanka and the Union of Myanmar was established pursuant to the signing of the Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation which was signed on February 1, 1996.

    ADDRESSING a public meeting at the Vavuniya Urban Council grounds yesterday (5) on the occasion of sending off several thousand Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) back to their original places of residence, Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP appealed to them to set aside ethnic and religious differences and rally round President Mahinda Rajapaksa to bring peace and prosperity to the country. Once the heroic Security Forces liberated the country what was uppermost in the mind of President Rajapaksa was to provide you with all possible facilities and resettle you in your original places of residence, he added.

  • SVAB President Learns More from MoD Seva Vanitha President

    MRS. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) called on Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, President Seva Vanitha Branch at Ministry of Defence (MoD) in order to learn more of the ongoing MoD welfare projects. The meeting at the MoD office on Tuesday (4) focused on MoD housing, health and community projects and other welfare activities. Mrs. Jayasuriya who just took over the presidency in the SVAB exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and explored possibilities of further expanding the welfare scope related to War Heroes.  

  • Police Recover 366 kg of C-4 Explosives in Vavuniya

    VAVUNUYA: AN LTTE terrorist arrested by the Police Intelligence Unit while he was hiding inside a Relief village in VAVUNIYA led the Police to recover a stock of about 366 kg of C-4 explosives on Wednesday (5). When questioning the terrorist, he has revealed that a stock of explosives and a detonator code had been kept buried in a forest area in KUMANKULAM, VAVUNIYA. The Police conducted a search later on and recovered the stock. Further questioning also led to the arrest of another terrorist from another location.

  • New Commander Calls on Asgiriya Prelate & Distributes Wheel Chairs Among Disable Soldiers

    PAYING his respect to age-old traditions, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya made a visit to the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thero,   Maha Nayaka of Asgiriya Chapter this morning (6) in Kandy and later on distributed fifty wheel chairs and two-hundred crutches during a brief ceremony at the historic Mangul Maduwa (ceremonial hall). Lieutenant General Jayasuriya visited the monastery as number one on his day’s agenda and offered Atapirikara to the Maha Nayaka Thero in accordance with historic traditions. Ven. Asgiriya Maha Nayaka Thero was not available in Kandy when the Army Chief visited Malwatte Chapter Maha Nayaka Thero a few weeks ago soon after he assumed duties as Commander of the Army.
