  • Nearly 30,000 Children Under 18 in Welfare Villages

    THERE are nearly 30,000 children under the age of 18 staying in welfare villages and transit centres. Around 850 have lost one or both parents. The Probation and Child Care Services Department and Provincial Departments hold the responsibility of caring for those children, Probation and Child Care Services Commissioner D.M.S. Abeygunawardana told the Daily News yesterday. Abeygunawardana said these children are staying in welfare villages and transit camps with their relatives.

    Sri Lanka Army in collaboration with the Regional Mine Action Office (RMAO), Jaffna recently had a two-day Mine Risk Education workshop at Jaffna Hindu College to coincide with the International Mine Action Day that fell on 4th of April. The workshop included a variety of programmes such as lectures, discussions, dramas and exhibitions offering a comprehensive knowledge to schoolchildren, teachers and a section of the general public on risks posed by mines.........

  • Army De-miners Start Unearthing Mines in & Around Jaffna Fort Moat

     
    The historic Dutch-built Jaffna Fort vandalized by Tiger terrorists using it as a strong point for their cover some time ago is being brought back to its old grandeur with the support of Army Engineers who have commenced unearthing LTTE mines and Unexploded Ordnance around its moat. In parallel with renovation work undertaken by the Department of Archaeology, now in progress with financial support given by the government of Netherlands.....

  • Army Wheelchair Tennis Players Secure 5th Place in South African Tournament


    Players of the Army’s Wheelchair Tennis Association represented Sri Lanka in the Wheelchair Tennis World Team Cup tournament in Pretoria, South Africa and secured the 5th place in the World Group II category competing against 16 countries. The tournament was held from 25th April to 01 May. Sri Lanka Army funded the passage for the team whilst other expenses were borne by Sri Lanka Tennis Association.

    AS THE WHOLE country celebrates freedom gained after eliminating LTTE menace from the country, Sri Lankan expatriates in USA organized various ceremonies to express their solidarity and invoke blessings on our War Heroes. Peace loving Sri Lankans in Atlanta, USA recently organized a multi-religious ceremony in memory of War Heroes and other civilians of all ethnicities who were killed in LTTE terrorism in the past and also to bless those who were injured. The organizers expect to promote unity among all major religions and ethnic communities under one flag through these events. A number of cultural activities had also been organized with participation of Sri Lankans living in Georgia during the event.
