  • Commander Speaks High of Ranaviru Apparel War Heroes

    The role of disable War Heroes at Yakkala Ranaviru Apparels was recognized and well-evaluated Friday (23rd) evening when the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya awarded gifts to them in appreciation of their contribution to Army uniform manufacturing. Twenty five War Heroes who showed exceptional skills in the sphere of special tailoring, knitting, sewing, etc were thus appreciated during this award ceremony, graced by  Commander of the Army and a large gathering of retired officers, serving officers and distinguished guests.

  • Mechanized Infantry Regiment Establishes Its First Volunteer Battalion

    The first volunteer Infantry battalion of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment was raised on the instructions of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on 22nd July 2010 in a military ceremony, held at Arsakulapuram, Pooneryn. The chief guest for the occasion was Major General M. P. Peiris, Colonel of the Regiment of Mechanized Infantry Regiment and Vice Chancellor of the Kothalawala Defence University.

  • FIRST WITNESS CROSS EXAMINING TO CONTINUE

    The Court Martial I hearing charges against General Sarath Fonseka’s alleged participation in political work while in active service commenced its sittings at 1400 hours on Monday (26). Cross examining and lead of evidence of the first witness is to continue once again when the sittings resume on Monday (02nd August 2010) at 1500 hours. (Ends)

  • Japan-Lanka Friendship Association Does it Again

    Japan-Lanka Friendship Association, presided by Dr Lal Thilakarathne which has been at the forefront since 1998, providing the Army with ambulances, fire engines, medical equipment and other accessories, has once again reassured its continuing goodwill and donated one more ambulance and three fire engines worth  Rs. 124 million for use of the Army this morning (26).

  • Eelam War IV: Tiger Captives Down to 7,900, Rehab Programme on Track

    Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation says LTTE cadres are being gradually released from government centres following rehabilitation in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Brig. Ranasinghe, who succeeded Major General Daya Ratnayake, says their work is on track thereby allowing small groups of LTTE cadres to rejoin their families every month.In a brief interview with The Island on Sunday (July 25), Brig. Ranasinghe said that 7,948 ex-combatants, including about 1,100 females were still undergoing rehabilitation.

  • 214 Brigade Moves into New Building Complex

    The Pudukkulam 214 Brigade Headquarters under Wanni Security Forces Headquarters, hitherto remained housed in temporary structures, recently moved into a new complex, constructed with the labour, donated by all troops and members of the Civil Defence Force. The location has been allotted by the District Secretary. 

  • Sacred Temple in Madu Area Restored

    The sacred Buddhist place of worship, Sri Bodhiraja temple in Madu area, along Mannar - Parayanakulam road that remained dilapidated and abandoned after 1985, following escalation of LTTE terrorism in the area received a facelift and was reopened for the benefit of about 500 Buddhists residing in the area.
