  • Greatest Victory in Our Country

    MAJOR GENERAL Lalin Fernando (Retired) in an interview with the Daily News expressed his views on the most significant military victory accomplished by the Armed Forces freeing the nation from three decades of LTTE terror. He said he considers the soldiers who waged this war against terrorism as the greatest treasure while the Leaders who boosted the morale and gave the leadership as the greatest Leaders we have had in our history. Q: How do you view the military victory achieved by the Armed Forces? A:This is the greatest victory in the history of our country, because we have got rid of a terrorist who destroyed our country during the past three decades. I look at the soldiers who fought this war as the greatest treasure we have and the Leaders who gave the morale and the leadership as the greatest Leaders we have had in our history.

  • Ex - LTTE Combatants to be Reintegrated to Society

    THE Government is set to announce a National Framework Proposal on the reintegration of ex-combatants into civilian life shortly. This will be a key element of its post-conflict peace building and development process. The envisioned policy intervention is designed to facilitate the reintegration of ex-combatants and contribute towards durable peace, by improving the employability of ex-combatants for civilian occupation, minimizing risk of socio-economic marginalization and ensuring them a smooth transition from military affiliations into larger communities.

    ARMY COMMANDER General Sarath Fonseka yesterday said the media personnel who had been paid by the LTTE to promote its cause would be appropriately dealt with according to the law. He said so in an interview with ITN last night. In answer to a question what he proposed to do in respect of journalists in the pay of the LTTE, as revealed by the two LTTE spokesmen now in custody, General Fonseka said, such people should be considered traitors and brought to book.

  • Take a Cue from Security Forces ; Defence Secretary Tells Public:

    DEFENCE Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday (25) said the people can take a cue from the Security Forces’ victory and render their optimum service to the country’s development. The Defence Secretary was speaking at a ceremony to felicitate Security Forces who defeated LTTE terrorists, at a ceremony at the Defence Ministry.“The Security Forces have proved themselves that nothing is impossible if we have perseverance and dedication. Their sacrifice for the past 30 years for a peaceful country has borne fruit,” he said. He stressed that public should carry out what the country expects from them without hesitation.

  • Mop-up Operations Collect More LTTE Explosives

    WANNI: MOP-UP operations in VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL, PANALKANDAMADU and KADJUWATHTHA areas continued on Thursday (28) as usual since those areas are still infested with LTTE explosive devices, landmines, booby traps, etc.  Two claymore mines of 7.5 kg each and seventy six Anti Personnel Mines were among major recoveries from VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL area, the same day.The rest included eleven C-90 weapons, eighteen Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) heat bombs, thirteen OG 9 mm bombs.....

  • HUNT FOR KP; Govt. Seeks Interpol Assistance To Arrest Chief Tiger Arms Procurer

    THE SRI LANKAN government yesterday sought international police (Interpol) assistance to locate and arrest the LTTE’s arms procurement chief Kumaran Padmanadan alias KP believed to be hiding somewhere in South East Asia. Government sources said countries alerted included Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand from where KP was believed to be operating while Australia and Britain were also indicated as likely countries where KP could be living.

  • Eastern Tigers want to Surrender

    THE LTTE groups which are known to have infiltrated the Eastern Province have sought the help of National Integration Minister Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan to arrange for them to surrender to the military. After the EP was liberated, these small groups were holed up in the jungle and continued to attack villages such as Moneragala and Ampara and are said to have killed a number of civilians. Minister Muralitharan who before his defection from the LTTE led its fighting cadres as eastern commander told Daily Mirror yesterday that the leaders of these groups had contacted him and asked for his support to surrender to government forces.

    MINISTER of Trade and Consumer Affairs Bandula Gunawardene said the Sim card in Prabhakaran’s cellular telephone has revealed vital information on the activities of several leading personalities in the south. Addressing a meeting on Sunday (24) at the Dambulla Economic Centre, he said the pro-LTTE elements in the south were responsible for many crises in the country and the price hikes in the local market.

  • Sri Lankans Hold Peace Rally in Washington DC

    SEVERAL hundred Sri Lankan Americans and friends of Sri Lanka gathered in Washington for a daylong peace rally in support of the Sri Lankan victory over the LTTE earlier this week. Billed as Sri Lanka: One nation - under one flag, the rally organised by “We are Sri Lankans” was held in the shadow of The White House. The rally was attended by Sri Lankan Americans cutting across ethnic and religious persuasions.

  • Aiding and Abetting Terror Under the Cover of 'Human Rights'

    THE EU and some members of the “International Community” (IC) have unfortunately joined the LTTE international wing in adding their voice to alleged Human Rights violations during the last stages of the “civil” war in Sri Lanka states a Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights for Sri Lanka Inc. (SPUR) in a media release. Excerpts: It said: ‘What are these countries doing in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan and what have they been doing in many other countries in S. America, Africa and Asia - if not committing human rights violations and possible war crimes and crimes against humanity?
