  • Army men on their way back

    As normalcy inched its way through the catastrophic floods that devastated thousands of homes and claimed hundreds of innocent lives in recent times, hundreds of Army troops deployed to coordinate, assist and implement urgent rescue and relief measures began to phase out on Tuesday (17) after successfully carrying out responsibilities, entrusted to them subsequent to a request made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.
  • LTTE Attempts To Kill Family

    AMPARA: A GROUP OF THREE LTTE TIGER TERRORISTS consisting of a female dressed in black and armed with knives and clubs broke into a house in NUGALANADA, BAKKIELA on Thursday(15) at about 7.15 p.m. occupied by a family of three including a child one and half years old. They cut KARUNASENA (46 years) the father who was sleeping while the LTTE female Tiger Terrorist grabbed the child who was being breast fed and fled with the child. It is the factice of the Tamil tiger terrorists to initiate their recruits into killing innocents by first training them to use swards, knives, kathis and sharp instrument to make them ruthless, blood thirsty killers. The cries raised by the mother alerted the home guards. A search party found the child abandoned with wounds on the neck. SLMM was to be informed
  • Eight Tamil Youths Abducted In KIRAN

    KIRAN: A GROUP OF LTTE ARMED PERSONS abducted EIGHT youth from their homes in the KIRAN area at about 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday (14). The incident was reported to the ERAVUR police by the parents of three of the abducted youth. SLMM was to be informed.

    Seven Mine Detecting Dogs (MDD) and eleven Army personnel trained as Dog Handlers received their graduation recently at Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering (SLSME) in Thunkama, Embilipitiya at a colourful ceremony, graced by a top-ranking US delegation.

  • LTTE Attempts To Create Communal Backlash: Security Forces Take Preventive Actions

    SUBSEQUENT TO THE BRUTAL MASSACRE of innocent civilians, killing 64 and injuring over 80 including Buddhist monks and children at KEBITIGOLLEWA-ANURADHAPURA today (15) in LTTE claymore mine attack, the Security Forces undertook deterrent measures to neutralize certain identified LTTE (Tamil Tigers) Terrorist Targets in SAMPUR and MULAITIVU areas to prevent further acts of this nature in the future. Defence Authorities deny any action being refereed out by the Sinhalese villagers or the Security Forces to harass innocent Tamil civilians. These LTTE atrocities are provocative and intended to provoke a backlash from the Sinhalese community. The public is advised to remain calm in spite of any provocation and the Armed Forces and the Police will assure security to all citizens.
  • LTTE Claymore Mine Attack On Civilian Bus Kills over 50

    ANURADHAPURA: A BUS TRAVELING FROM KANUGAHAWEWA to KEBITHIGOLLEWA belonging to the Sri Lanka Transport Board with about 100 passengers mainly from the YAKAWELA area was trapped in an LTTE claymore mine explosion at VIHARAHALMILLEWA, KONGOLLEWA at about 7.45 a.m. this morning (15) killing 58 passengers and injuring over 45. The powerful explosion had thrown the bus off the road to a distance of about 20 meters. It is feared that some passengers may be still trapped under the bus. A total of 25 bodies have been sent to the KEBTHIGOLLEWA hospital. The passengers included school children, men and women of all ages on their way to town. Rescue operations are underway.
  • HIGH RANKING US OFFICIALS VISIT DE-MINING SITES IN JAFFNA

    A high-ranking US delegation, including the donors, who gifted mine detection dogs to the Sri Lankan Army, in order to accelerate and intensify ongoing de-mining programmes, and to support the government's current resettlement projects for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), visited de-mining sites in Jaffna peninsula during 11-12 June 2004 after they declared open new Dog Kennels erected for Mine Detection Dogs.

    The State funeral accorded to the late Maha Nayake of the Malwatte Chapter of the Siam Maha Nikaya, Most Venerable Rambukwelle Sri Vippasi Maha Nayake Thera took place at Asgiriya Police Grounds, Kandy on Sunday (13) amidst a large gathering of religious dignitaries, VIPs, Chiefs of Armed Forces and the Police, mourners, both laity and the laymen.
