613 Infantry Brigade troops together with 3 (V) Gemunu Watch (GW) and 14 (V) GW troops launched a mega-scale beach cleaning project along the coastal belt of Matara Delikanda and the Nilwala river estuary on Monday (Mar 27).
The beach patch remained badly-polluted due to heaps of pollutants, like polythene waste, empty plastic bottles, etc for a long time before the troops organized the project.
In parallel with the project, about 100 civilians, belonging to several government agencies, school children and local residents, also joined hands with the troops for success of the project.
After the collection of the garbage, troops ensured segregation of the pollutants as degradable and non-degradable for recycling purposes.
Towards the culmination of the event, Nestle Lanka PLC offered a delicious lunch to the participants in the beach cleaning project.
Major General Udaya Herath, General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division attended the event and provided necessary guidance, together with Brigadier Indika Jayaweera, Commander, 613 Infantry Brigade and Major P.A.G.A.P Madiththapola, Commanding Officer, 3 (V) GW.
