SLAVF Awards Incentives to Achievers in Ranaviru Families

A total of 125 children of officers and soldiers serving the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) during a ceremony at BMICH on Tuesday (28), received educational assistance as scholarships to the value of Rs 3 million, plus 25 new laptop computers.

Award of such incentives to school-going children of SLAVF War Heroes has been an annual feature in the organization for the past few years.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Seva Vanitha Unit took part in the distribution ceremony as the Chief Guest, together with Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army and Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch at the invitation of Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, Commandant, SLAVF.

Under this year’s scholarship programme, 125 students who shone in the Grade 5 examination, G.C.E (O/L) examination and the G.C.E (A/L) examination, qualifying to receive university admission, were awarded those scholarships.

Twenty-five students of Grade 5 examination, one-hundred G.C.E (O/L) and G.C.E (A/L) achievers accordingly received Rs 10,000/= and Rs 15,000/= worth scholarships respectively during the ceremony.

In addition, 25 new laptops that would help higher studies of those university entrants were gifted to 25 students at the same ceremony.
 
Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe and Mrs Sepali Samarasinghe, Chairperson, SLAVF Seva Vanitha Unit joined in succession for distribution of those scholarships during the ceremony.

Lieutenant General Ratnayake, sharing a few of his thoughts on the SLAVF project at the ceremony thanked everyone for making this an annual event which provides a fillip to the SLAVF families and their precious children.

One cannot underestimate the contribution that has always been made by the SLAVF towards the Sri Lanka Army and its onward march. SLAVF officers and soldiers for the sake of the country made the supreme sacrifice, became disable and worked closely hand in hand during the humanitarian operations that brought victory to the country, the Commander said.

‘Such offers of scholarships being awarded every year are incentives that would lead you to higher levels in studies. I must thank the SLAVF board for such selections because they are the future leaders who would steer the country to success. So all children should make use of these supportive gestures and do well in the future,’ the Commander added.

He also did not forget to thank the Chief Guest, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa for gracing the event, despite her day’s busy schedule.

Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, Mrs Sepali Samarasinghe, in the company of a few scholarship recipients, received the Chief Guest on arrival at the venue. Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, Commandant, SLAVF together with Mrs Samarasinghe welcomed the Commander of the Army and his spouse.

Chief of Staff, Major General Crishantha De Silva, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General E.P De Z. Abeysekara, Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Engineer Service Regiment, Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Major General Sumedha Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters-West, Major General A.M. Perera, Director, Rehabilitation, Deputy SLAVF Commandant, Major General W.D.L.P Wickramasinghe, officers, spouses, scholarship recipients and several sponsors of the programme were present at the ceremony.
