Army Soldiers Contribute to 'Vesak' Commemoration

Hundreds of troops serving island-wide formations, including the Army Headquarters, have extended their fullest assistance to make the annual Vesak celebrations a huge success and an attraction.
    
Special Vesak arrangements, conducted with state patronage at Gangarama Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone, Battaramulla Diyawanna Vesak Zone, Bauddhaloka Mawatha Vesak Zone, Panagoda Sri Bodhirajarama Vesak Zone, Mahiyangana Rajamaha Vihara Vesak Zone, Gampaha-Mahara Vesak Zone and Temple Trees are receiving Army patronage by way of participation, Sil observance, preparation of Vesak lanterns, provision of refreshments and foods, recital of devotional songs, distribution of flowers and other offerings, erection of decorations, etc on the directions of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

On Wednesday (22) hundreds of officers and other ranks from all regiments observed a full-day Sil campaign at Panagoda Sri Bodhirajaramaya (Army temple) during an elaborate programme, comprised of a release of cattle, freed from slaughtering and a Vesak lantern competition. A Gilanpasa Perahera, a devotional song presentation plus a Bodhi Pooja on Vesak day (24) at the same venue will add colour to the arrangements at Panagoda.  

Similarly, another Sil campaign organized by the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on Wednesday (22) attracted more than 1000 officers and other ranks serving the headquarters. Several eminent Buddhist scholars and lecturers, in addition to the monks contributed to the arrangement.

Meanwhile, members of the Army prepared hundreds of colourful Vesak lanterns for Gangarama Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone, Sri Sambodhi Vihara Vesak Zone and Diyawanna Vesak Zone and made arrangements to display them in respective places.

Likewise, Army troops provided their active assistance to the Temple Trees Vesak Dansela by way of preparing meals for the devotees. At Mahiyanganaya, troops provided their assistance for preparations underway in connection with the ceremonial opening of the new ‘Uposathagaraya’ of the Bhikkus. Troops at Mahara, Gampaha provided a float that included singers of devotional songs.

In the meantime, troops serving the SFHQ-West, SFHQ-Central, SFHQ-Wanni, SFHQ-Jaffna, SFHQ-East, SFHQ-Kilinochchi and SFHQ-Mullaittivu have made their own Vesak preparations and decorations with the support of public in the areas.
