Army troops were able to rescue more than 470 people under siege in Prianbadathieve, Murukkanthieve and Koraweli two days ago after floods cut off them from the mainland due to recent torrential rains and surging waters.

In the same way, after the Rugam tank overflowed due to heavy rains, people in Kithula village, Eravur, were inundated and left without any connection to the mainland. Army troops jumped into action and rescued them before they were moved into temporary safe places.

When people in Vakarai area lost connection with the Valachchenai town after the banks of the Panichchankerni bridge burst due to floods, Army troops immediately assisted them to re-link with the mainland for their day-today needs.

Meanwhile, due to gushing waters, troops serving 23 Division were compelled to salvage a large number of civilians in Batticaloa, Poonani and Polonnaruwa areas in  Polonnaruwa District and Batticaloa District.

In the meantime, heavy flood waters caused inundation in Kelebogaswewa, Nawatkulam and Pawattakulam areas in the 563 Brigade area under the 56 Division of the Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni when the provincial tanks had begun to spill water after bursting banks. Troops using jute bags of sand replaced the damage tank bunds and avoided further overflowing in the area.

Similarly, Vavuniya based 56 Division troops immediately restored the burst Rambavettikulam Tank bund early morning on Thursday (27) after replacing a culvert to the threatened cracks on the bund.
