Two Huge LTTE Fragmentation Mines, Huge Vessel &;amp; Radar Found

MULLAITTIVU: TROOPS moving in captured AMPELAVANPOKKANAI areas in the No Fire Zone during their searches uncovered two huge LTTE improvised fragmentation mines, named after the Tiger producer ( see photo at left) along with many other LTTE items.

Those two most devastating explosive devices, quite similar to the function of claymore mines, carried the name, ‘Eerthan-99’ , most probably the Tiger terrorist who was responsible for production of it for LTTE terrorist activities.

The recovery of a big sea-vessel, kept completely covered with palmyrah leaves and thatched cadjans came about minutes after twenty-one member Catholic priests escaped LTTE grip and arrived in the cleared areas on Sunday (26) (see separate Situation Report). The wooden vessel still operational and intact appears to have been kept for an emergency. It also shows that two large caliber guns, fixed to it earlier have been abruptly dismantled and taken away.

The transmission tower, running more than some 75m in height and the capture of a modern radar unit during those searches, testify to the fact that Tigers were preparing themselves to meet any contingencies with the entry of Army troops into uncleared areas.

Among other recoveries made from the areas included 12.7mm ammunition rounds, arms and ammunition, explosive devises, etc.
