‘Inter Regiment Sports Championship-2023’ Appreciates International & Local Achievements of Army Sports Stars

The awarding ceremony of the ‘Inter Regiment Sports Championship - 2023’, a much-awaited inspirational event in the Regimental calendar of sports got underway at Panagoda Army indoor stadium on Thursday (26 October), headed by Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army.

In 2023, a multitude of 40 inter-regiment sports events took place at different regimental locations across the country in order to pick the best of the best sportsmen and women. These sport championships were organized to enhance the athletic abilities of Army sportsmen and sportswomen, aiming to nurture talented individuals who can represent Sri Lanka in national and international competitions, ultimately enabling them to secure victories at international levels.

Brigadier P.A.M Peiris RSP USP psc, Director, Directorate of Sports warmly welcomed the Commander of the Army on his arrival at the premises. Afterwards, The Commander was invited to launch an Army Sport E- Album which was produced by the Directorate of Sports, together with the Directorate of Media and Directorate of Information Technology before the main segment of the day’s agenda kicked off. Army Sports E- album is comprised of all the sports history, sports activities and sports events in the Sri Lanka Army.

After the welcome speech, the first segment of the awards was presented by Major General S.P.A.I.M.B Samarakoon Hdmc Lsc, Commander, Army Logistic Command, Major General W.H.K.S Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces - West and Major General M.K Jayawardena RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu for those runners-up in various events.

Next, the Commander of the Army was invited to award trophies to the champion regiments in the ‘Inter Regiment Sports Championship-2023’ along with cash incentives for sportsmen and sportswomen who brought home international achievements during the recent ‘19th Asian Games’ in Hangzhou, China. Major General U.D Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Major General G.R.R.P Jayawadena RWP RSP ndu, Quarter Master General also joined Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage in awarding trophies.

After the awarding ceremony, Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, Director General General Staff together with Brigadier P.A.M Peiris RSP USP psc, Director, Directorate of Sports presented a special memento to the Commander of the Army in appreciation of his presence at the ceremony.

Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks of the Army enthusiastically watched the awarding ceremony.
