Year's Much-Awaited Army Inter Regiment Athletic Meet Ends With New Hopes

The closing session of the 48th Army Inter Regiment Athletic Meet - 2011, organized by the Army Athletic Association, took place Friday (4) evening with all the pomp and ceremony of a sports event of international standards.

As keen sports men and women, displaying highest professional sportsmanship, over 1500 Army athletes representing 24 Regiments vied with their fellow-athletes for three days (Nov 2,3 & 4) at the Army built Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium for supremacy.

Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineer soldier, Private C Kapukotuwa produced a Sri Lankan record in Hammer Throwing event, having thrown it to a distance of 43.90 meters, along with seven more records.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army in his oration to the occasion appealed the sportsmen to be prepared to take part in Commonwealth Games as such as possible in the future.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army graced the occasion as Chief Guest at the invitation of the Army Athletic Association.

Comprised of track and field events, the annual Meet mirrored the enthusiasm Army sportsmen have in Marathon races and relays, Long distance running, Archery, High and Long Jumps, Shot Puts, Javelin, Discus throwing Power lifting, Swimming, Shooting, Badminton, Volleyball, Cycling and an array of other sports. 34 Men’s events and 33 Women’s events added spirits of sportsmanship to the three-day long Meet.

The tournament reached its final stage after initial competitions were conducted at regimental levels within several weeks before their participation in final rounds at the Meet.

Instructors at the Panagoda Army Physical Training School (APTS) added variety to the closing ceremony staging a spectacular display of physical training.

Major General R.M.D Ratnayake, Chairman, Army Athletics Association welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival before the final rounds of several athletic events got underway in the presence of the distinguished gathering of invitees and Army personnel.

This platform for display of Army’s athletic skills and talents at Diyagama was coloured by band displays which added glamour to the occasion through patriotic melodies.

The overall Championship in Men’s events in the Inter Regiment Meet went to Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment while Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers secured runners-up in the Meet. Women’s Championship was clinched by 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps.

Sergeant Mendis of Gamunu Watch and Lance Corporal Rathnakumari of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Women’s Corps were adjudged the Best Male and the Female Athlete in the Meet - 2011.

The climax of the Meet reached as Commander of the Army as Chief Guest was invited to award medals and trophies to competitors who excelled in different fields of sports.

After award of trophies to competitors, the Commander presented a special memento to the daughter of late Brigadier Pary Liyanage who rendered an indelible service to the field of Army athletics before his sudden demise.  

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya after distribution of trophies delivered a brief address to the occasion highlighting the importance of collective sportsmanship.

The arrangement sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Ltd (Munchee) was also attended by Major General Palitha Fernando (Retd), Military Liaison Officer (MLO) at Ministry of Defence and Urban Development and Chairman, Sri Lanka Athletic Association.
