Woman Soldiers in Jaffna Contribute to International Women's Day

Lady Officers and women soldiers representing all regiments serving under the Security Force HQ-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on International Women's Day (8 March) contributed to the commemoration of the event by holding exhibitions of vegetable/fruit carvings and handcrafts, conduct of lectures and volleyball matches and a musical show at the SFHQ-J premises.

Arrangements, themed, 'She is the Pride of the Nation', attended by more than 215 attendees were chaired by Major General Swarna Bothota, Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna and Mrs Harshani Bothota, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps Seva Vanitha Branch.

The Chief Inspector of Police at Kankesanthurai Police Station at the invitation of organizers delivering a lecture on 'Women’s Rights and Child Rights' dwelt on a wide variety of aspects, related to the subject. 7 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps troops took the lead in organizing the competition of food carvings and handcrafts.

In parallel with the commemoration, a volleyball tournament among female players got underway on 6 March 2023 at the SFHQ-J gymnasium with the participation of 9 teams, currently performing duties at the SFHQ-Jaffna.

Major General Swarna Bothata and Mrs Harshani Bothota as Chief Guests distributed prizes and certificates to the achievers on the International Women's Day.

The evening musical show brought the day's arrangements to an end.

On the same day, troops of the 4 (V) SLAWC located at Kokavil, Kilinochchi organized a series of events to celebrate the International Women’s Day 2023 under the guidance of Major General Darshana Wijesekara, Colonel Commandant of SLAWC and Commander, Security Forces - Mullaitivu.

Troops cleaned both roadsides along the A-9 road around the camp premises during morning hours and listened to a fruitful lecture on ‘Prevention of Breast Cancer’ delivered by Major C.D Rajasekara, Medical Officer of the 1 Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps.

Afterwards, troops through their own funding bought baby care sets and sanitary-ware baby equipment for pregnant women at Kilinochchi District Hospital to the value of Rs. 30,000.00. Both Officers and Other Ranks in the 4 (V) SLAWC in addition entertained them to a sumptuous lunch after providing those gift parcels to them.

In the meantime, the 1st Battalion of the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) celebrated the International Women’s day at its camp on 10 March 2023.

Lectures delivered by Dr Priyangani Jayasundara, an International Training Consultant in Educational Management on 'Dress and Appearance' as the first segment of the day educated the gathering.

Thereafter, Mr. Amila Ranasinghe and his team conducted a workshop on ‘Resin Arts' before another lecture 'Jeewithayata Aruthak” was delivered by Mr. Kasun Gunarathne, Principal at Homagama Mahinda College.

During the afternoon session, staff at People's Bank at Borella conducted a promotion drive and educated on the importance of savings. The final segment of the day was a musical session that provided amusement to the attendees. Gifts were also presented to all soldiers who participated in the programme.

In the meanwhile, 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC) serving under the Security Force HQ-Mullaittivu following guidelines given by Major General Darshana Wijesekara, Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps and Commander, Security Forces -Mullaitivu marked the International Women's Day on 8 March.

As the first segment of the day, the 2 (V) SLAWC troops along with their Commanding Officer, all Officers and Other Ranks carried out a cleaning programme at Kokeliya temple and joined a Bodhi Pooja Pinkama.

Afterwards, they under two teams participated in a Basketball match, played at the Basketball court at the Security Force HQ-Wanni.
