West Troops Assist Tsunami Preparedness Workshops for Students

61 Infantry Division troops recently lent their assistance to the Disaster Management Center officials-managed two-day workshop on ‘Tsunami Preparedness' with the participation of around 1000 students, school staff and parents at Kumara Kashyapa Kanishta Vidyalaya, Madampagama and Madampa Maha Vidyalaya, Madampagama, both situated along the Ambalangoda-Madampe coastal belt.

The workshops were held under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on March 1 and 3, inclusive of theoretical and practical (mock drills) for the children. Lieutenant Colonel J.E.L de Soyza, Civil Affairs Officer, 61 Infantry Division, together with troops attended the event and provided assistance to the authorities as necessitated by them.

Major General Udaya Herath, General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division guided the troops following guidelines given by Major General Deepal Pussella, Commander, Security Forces - West.

Moreover, Mr Sunil Jayaweera, Director of Preparedness Planning at the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Lieutenant Colonel R.L.D Liyanage, Assistant Director of the District Disaster Management Coordinating Unit (DDMCU), District Secretariat, Galle and government officials also were present at the workshops.
