Visually-Impaired Two War Heroes Gifted with Sophisticated OrCam Read Devices

The Directorate of Rehabilitation of the Army with the objective of facilitating visually-disabled War Heroes with best of the best advanced technological aids coordinated the supply of two OrCam Read devices with smart cameras to two most senior Army Officers who had lost vision due to terrorist attacks during humanitarian operations before May 2009.

With the blessings of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Dr. Upendra Pieris, Chief Executive Officer, Orel IT (Pvt) Ltd gifted those two sophisticated hand-held devices, manufactured in Israel to the value of about Rs 1.4 m.

The automatic OrCam Read device enables the user to receive an audio interpretation of any English language document when the device is fixed to the eye glasses. Accordingly, both those devices were gifted to Brigadier Sisira Dharmasena and Lieutenant Colonel Dushyantha Yapa who sustained injuries during the peak of the humanitarian operation and lost their visions.

A simple ceremony, held at the Directorate of Rehabilitation auditorium on Wednesday (29), headed by Brigadier Thushan Senarathne, Director, Rehabilitation and Dr. Upendra Pieris, Chief Executive Officer, Orel IT (Pvt), presented the two devices to those two War Heroes who are still serving the Army.
