VIR War Heroes Commemorated in Special Ceremony

The third phase of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment’s (VIR) War Hero commemorative ceremony took place recently at the Boyagane VIR Regimental Headquarters.

655 spouses, children and close relatives of 288 fallen/missing VIR War Heroes during this ceremony, headed by Colonel of the Regiment, Major General R.V Samarathunga, received accolades and appreciation.

Those relatives planted medicinal herbs in memory of each fallen War Hero in the separate herbal garden, run by the VIR Headquarters in the location. A special sermon, administered by Ven Dodampahala Sri Rahula Thero afterwards invoked merits on fallen War Heroes and blessed children and spouses of those families.

As another feature of the day’s programme, all the relatives were interviewed by officer representatives of the Welfare, Additional Welfare Directorates and VIR Seva Vanitha Unit senior officer bearers, in order to resolve their problems and remaining issues with special focus on future progress of the children.

Towards end of the programme, the chief guest, Major General R.V Samarathunga awarded four scholarships to children of War Heroes, each valued at Rs 5,000/=. On the same occasion, VIR Seva Vanitha Unit donated 10 artificial legs to VIR disable War Heroes as a token of their respect to those injured War Heroes.

A large number of VIR officers and other ranks, invitees and War Hero children attended the ceremonies.
