VIR Troops Commemorating 31st Anniversary at Boyagane Refresh Memories

Sri Lanka Army’s Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), one of the most prestigious and battle-hardened fighting units, following its cherished traditions as well as military formalities commemorated its 31st anniversary at the VIR Regimental Centre at Boyagane, Kurunegala on Monday (22) in a fitting ceremony, headed by Major General Sisira Pilapitiya, Colonel of the Regiment, VIR.

Giving pride of place to military formalities by adhering to all health precautions and guidelines, the day’s Chief Guest, Major General Sisira Pilapitiya, Colonel of the Regiment, VIR was at first welcomed by the Centre Commandant of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment on arrival at the entrance.

A subsequent Guard Turnout at the entrance greeted him in accordance with military formalities before he was ushered to VIR monuments. The next moment on the itinerary was solemn and dignified since memories would never die, as they say, giving pride of place to the memory of all fallen Vijayabahu War Heroes, the day's protagonist, Colonel of the Regiment, laid floral wreaths at the War Heroes' Monument and the separate Parama Weera Vibushana (PWV) Monument and paid his tribute to their memory

The stage was set for the day’s highlight, next as the Parade Commander in his colourful attire reported the parade to the Colonel of the Regiment in accordance with military traditions. The ceremonial Guard of Honour with Regimental Colours, then saluted the Colonel of the Regiment as all eyes remained glued to the pinnacle of day’s commemorative military events.

Leaving symbolic memories in the premises, Colonel of the Regiment was later on invited to plant a sapling in the regimental premises and then posed for a group photograph with all Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers at the Regimental HQ.

The much-awaited moment of significance on the day’s itinerary followed next as the Colonel of the Regiment rose to his feet with his customary address to the troops who had been awaiting in the Regimental playground, in which he paid a special tribute to all former Colonels of the Regiment and Ex-archers of the Regiment for their dedicated service that made the VIR one of the most elegant regiments in the Sri Lanka Army.

Monday’s commemorative ceremony reached its final showdown with an all rank lunch arranged at the ‘Salute’ Multifunctional Hall. VIR Senior officers, Commanding Officers and battalion representatives, Regimental Staff and Other Ranks, together with the Colonel of the Regiment shared the lunch treat bringing arrangements to end.
